An Ideal Venue for Small Group Activities

Blackfordby award – winning Old School Room is a beautiful historic building, in the heart of Blackfordby village, newly refurbished and providing an intimate and cosy venue for a variety of uses.

In 2026 it was named Community Facility of the Year by the Rural Communities Council for the whole of Leicestershire and Rutland.

It has now been enhanced with new accessible toilet facilities and a lovely galley kitchen with tea and coffee making facilities.

Entirely run by our team of local volunteers, our warm space can accommodate 30-35 people and the main hall measures 50m2.

There are ample trestle and bistro-style tables and chairs plus we even have some furniture for the little ones!

Originally built in 1843, the hall on Main Street is Blackfordby’s original schoolroom, and it remained so until the building of  St. Margaret’s primary school in 1889.

For the last hundred and thirty years, the Old School Room has been made available for villagers to use. After the children left, the building became a Sunday School used by the old Wesleyan chapel. By the 1920s, it had become known as The Institute and was used to host billiards, wedding receptions, WI meetings, and produce shows by the village garden society.

After Blackfordby Village Hall was constructed in 1974, the Old School Room became home to the village youth club. When that ceased in 2018, a new board of trustees decided to keep this historic building open as a public space.

This has meant holding lots of village fundraising events and obtaining local authority grants to refurbish and improve the facilities, making the building fit for public use in the 21st century.
